Op-Ed – Carbon Neutral Racing

Introduction

When given the opportunity to write an Op-Ed, I wanted a topic that could focus on two key points, Engineering and Environmental Preservation. The first thing that came to mind was the Carbon Footprint of Motorsports. Although, I knew very few details about the exact CO2 Emissions in racing, I knew that there was a lack of Carbon Neutral practices, as these teams and cars travel all around the world to provide entertainment, but at what cost?

Research

In order to find out how racing series, like Formula 1, impact the environment, lots of data had to be collected. Fortunately, the people in charge of F1, known as the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) released data back in 2019, revealing the truth,

F1’s decision to become a pioneer in achieving Carbon Neutral Racing that kept the sport’s spirit true, is important to the millions of fans that enjoy these races. It revealed to others that racing can be environmentally friendly.
